March is Brain Injury Awareness Month!

March 9, 2021 Posted by Studholme Chiropractic Blog No Comments

There are more than 5.3 million children and adults in the United States who are living with a permanent brain injury-related disability.

That’s one in every 60 people.

Obviously, some of these injuries are more severe than others but regardless of the severity of the injury, quality of life will be affected.

Probably the most talked about brain injury is concussion. Here are a few facts about concussion:

  1. Most concussions will recover in 12-14 days.
  2. You don’t have to lose consciousness to have sustained a concussion.
  3. 20-30% of people that sustain a concussion will develop persistent post-concussion symptoms that can be dramatically life altering. We discuss some of the innovative ways we treat post-concussion syndromes in this blog post.
  4. You are 3 times more likely to have another injury within 1 year of a concussion – especially if it is not properly rehabbed.

Can anything be done to reduce the likelihood of a concussion and increase speed of recovery?  The simple answer: YES!

Turns out that we can train the brain and eyes to react faster to our environment. This type of training is called Neuro Visual Training (NVT). NVT has been shown to reduce concussions by 80% when implemented in Division 1 NCAA football programs. It also improved the speed of recovery for those who sustained a concussion (if they had been previously doing the NVT.) Amazingly, NVT also has been shown to improve athletic performance and aid in injury rehab by improving neuroplasticity, which results in better recovery from injuries.

How cool is that?

You can simultaneously improve performance while helping reduce the likelihood of a concussion!
