Kinesiology Tape: the Dynamic Tape Difference.

May 12, 2020 Posted by Studholme Chiropractic Blog No Comments

You have probably seen kinesiology tape on athletes, people walking around, or maybe you’ve even had your own personal experience with it.

Believe it or not, all tapes are NOT created equal.

Since 2002, I’ve used various forms of kinesiology tape. I was first introduced to this tape at a course taught by the team Dr. for US Postal cycling (remember Lance Armstrong’s team?) Much has changed since then 😉 both in cycling and with tape. Today, there are a lot more brands of
kinesiology tape on the market (KT tape, Rock Tape, Spider-Tech.) The different brands are all similar with minor differences. Unfortunately, basic kinesiology tape never performed quite how I hoped it would, and the results were just okay, until…

In 2012, it all changed. I learned about Dynamic Tape. It looks just like kinesiology tape but is an entirely different type of tape. The most profound difference is that Dynamic Tape is a mechanical tape, and all other brands of kinesiology tape are not.

Kinesiology Tape

What does this mean?

It means that when properly applied, Dynamic Tape can help offload in excess of 30 pounds of force. Kinesiology tape can only offload .2 pounds of force (about the weight of 75 paper clips).

What does that mean?

That means that when we are managing injuries like a sprained ankle and we use Dynamic Tape, offloading 30lbs of force will allow you to walk around with much more ease. If we compare that to taping an ankle sprain with kinesiology tape, you would only get 75 paper clips worth of support.

Which would you rather have?

How does Dynamic Tape do this?

This is a bit technical, but….
Dynamic Tape acts mechanically like a spring. It decelerates motion to improve movement patterns. This can help to reduce load on injured or overworked structures in a muscle strain, ankle sprain, tennis elbow, or plantar fasciitis. It can also assist where weakness is present. For example, after an ACL repair, the tape addresses risk factors that can cause pain or re-injury.

Why does this matter?

Managing load is the key to a speedy recovery!

Dynamic Tape acts as an external muscle to correct movement and function and to help support load on weak or injured tissues. It is highly breathable, dries quickly, and does not restrict motion, making it arguably the most comfortable and effective tape available.

Don’t be fooled. We can help you stop wasting your time with lesser tapes! Even though Dynamic Tape may look like kinesiology tape, it isn’t. If you have an acute injury or a nagging injury, come in today, and let’s find out if Dynamic Tape can be a part of the solution.
