What Can Exercise Do For YOUR Brain?
In our last blog we spoke about brain injuries and concussions. We outlined ways in which we can decrease the likelihood of getting a concussion and improving the speed of recovery if you do get one.
In 2012, a study was published looking at the available data on improving cognitive function. The researchers found that exercise was just as effective as doing any kind of cognitive training like brain games. Turns out, physical activity has been shown to help with the formation of new neurons. That means it is good for brain health. (Hopefully you’re quickly running out of reasons not to be exercising regularly!)
Additionally, in a recent article in the Washington Post on the topic of what works to protect an aging brain, they stated that “a review of 46 trials with more than 5,000 participants published last year concluded that exercise is associated with reduced cognitive decline and seems especially effective for helping working memory. And a review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine of randomized, controlled trials concluded that in adults 50 and older, moderate intensity exercise (either aerobic exercise or strength training) was linked to improved cognitive function.
When exercise prescription was examined, a duration of 45–60 min per session and at least moderate intensity were associated with benefits for cognition. We know that 150-200 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week is the recommended dosage. So, that is ideally at least 4 times a week of moderate intensity exercise to protect the brain from aging.
