Benefits of Nasal Breathing : Series Part 1

January 15, 2020 Posted by Studholme Chiropractic Blog No Comments

For the past two years Dr. Studholme has been studying, training, and researching the effects of breathing on all aspects of health. Why? Well, what is the first thing you do when you come out of the womb and the last thing you do when you die?  You take a breath. In fact, you can live several days without water, and more without food, but you can only go a few minutes without breathing. This is the first of a several part video blog series on why we think you should integrate breathing into your current exercise, or training schedule.

Dr. Studholme and Sam have been training for the past 6 weeks with a device called Spirotiger, which is the only device on the market designed to properly train the diaphragm (the major muscle of breathing). (Stay tuned as we will be offering Spirotiger breathing classes very soon)

However, you don’t need a fancy piece of equipment to start to integrate breathing into your daily routine. It turns out most people are over-breathers and as a result they actually exhale too much CO2 / carbon dioxide (this is called hypocapnia).  The tissues need CO2 around to be able to deliver Oxygen to them. If you are over-breathing and don’t have enough CO2, you actually can’t deliver enough Oxygen to your muscles, brain, etc… and this vicious cycle can lead to fatigue, poor sleep, chronic pain, injuries, and much more. The good news is there is a simple place to start; nasal breathing.  What does this mean? Simple: close your mouth and breathe through your nose whenever you are not talking during the day.

The benefits to nasal breathing are many including; keeping more CO2 around and therefore delivery of more Oxygen to the body which will result in more energy, sleeping better, improved athletic performance, and better health!
